Here's how to launch the desktop mascots:

  1. Download the latest version of Java.

  2. Download the Roblox Desktop Mascots ZIP folder.

  3. Extract the files from the ZIP folder. To do this; right-click the ZIP folder and left-click "Extract All."

  4. Put the contents in Documents or another folder on your computer. Do not place the contents on your desktop.

  5. Open the folder of the desired character, and double click the Shimeji-ee application.

Multiple characters can be launched at once. You can left-click and drag to move them around. Additionally, you can right-click a character and choose from a menu of behaviors you'd like them to perform.

About Shimeji-ee

Shimeji-ee is a desktop application that allows animated characters to roam freely across the user’s computer screen. Originating from Japan, the concept of shimeji characters has become popular among people who enjoy adding a playful and interactive element to their desktop environment. The app functions as both a form of entertainment and a light customization tool, giving users the ability to bring their favorite characters to life in a fun and dynamic way.

When the application is launched, a character or multiple characters appear and begin moving around on top of all other open windows. They can walk, climb, and bounce across the desktop, as well as interact with the edges of the screen. These animations are looped and varied so the movement feels natural and charming. The characters can also duplicate themselves, leading to multiple animated figures moving at once. The number of active characters can be adjusted according to the user’s preference, allowing for a single character or a lively crowd to populate the screen.

Shimeji-ee is a Java-based program, meaning it can run on different operating systems as long as the necessary Java runtime environment is installed. It is lightweight and designed to be nonintrusive to computer performance, allowing it to run in the background while the user completes other tasks. The simplicity of its design makes it accessible for both casual computer users and those who enjoy customizing their digital spaces.

One of the main attractions of shimeji-ee is the ability to install different character sets. These character sets are often created by artists and shared online for others to enjoy. Popular sets include characters from anime, video games, cartoons, or original designs. Each set includes a folder of image files along with behavior scripts that define the character’s movements and actions. By replacing the image files, a user can completely change the appearance of the shimeji while keeping the same programmed behaviors.

Some shimeji-ee characters come with unique animations or special actions that make them distinct from others. For example, a character might occasionally sit down, eat, fall asleep, or perform a special move. These animations add personality and make the desktop feel more alive. Because the app supports customization, creative users can design their own characters using image editing software and then program them to perform specific movements or interact with certain areas of the screen.

The interaction with shimeji characters is part of the charm. Users can click and drag the characters across the screen, toss them to different areas, or watch them climb windows and swing from the edges. Some shimeji characters will “grab” windows and attempt to pull them around, creating a playful and unexpected effect. These small interactions can make working at a computer feel more engaging and lighthearted.

The application is not limited to one specific type of aesthetic. Users can choose minimal, abstract designs or highly detailed and expressive characters. This flexibility makes shimeji-ee appealing to a broad audience, from fans of cute mascots to those who enjoy quirky and humorous digital companions. Many people enjoy collecting multiple shimeji sets and switching between them depending on their mood or the season.

Shimeji-ee has also developed a small community of enthusiasts who share their creations online. Websites and forums host collections of shimeji characters, and some creators offer detailed guides on how to make custom sets. This has helped the app remain popular over the years, as new content continues to be added and shared. The ability to create original designs means that the library of available characters is constantly expanding, ensuring that users can always find something fresh to try.

Because shimeji-ee runs on top of other applications, it creates the feeling that the characters are inhabiting the same space as the user. For example, they might appear to walk along the toolbar, perch on the edge of a browser window, or slide down the side of a document. This blending of virtual elements with the everyday workspace is one of the main reasons the app remains appealing. It transforms the computer environment into something more personal and interactive.

Some users enjoy using shimeji-ee for themed events or celebrations. They may install festive characters for holidays, such as animated snowmen in winter or colorful flowers in spring. Others enjoy pairing the app with a matching desktop background to create a cohesive digital scene. In this way, shimeji-ee can serve as a form of artistic expression, allowing the desktop to become a canvas for creativity.

The program itself is straightforward to use. After downloading shimeji-ee and installing the necessary Java environment, the user simply selects the character set they want to run and launches the app. The character will appear instantly, and additional ones can be summoned through a simple menu. The menu also allows the user to control the number of active shimejis, pause their actions, or remove them from the screen entirely.

While the concept is lighthearted, the software’s customization potential makes it surprisingly versatile. Teachers, streamers, and content creators have used shimeji-ee to add a playful element to presentations, videos, and live streams. The presence of animated characters can create a more relaxed atmosphere, making digital spaces feel less sterile and more welcoming.

Overall, shimeji-ee is more than just a novelty. It is a piece of interactive desktop art that has inspired creativity and community involvement. By blending animation, customization, and user interaction, it creates a digital experience that is personal and engaging. Whether used for entertainment, aesthetic enhancement, or as a fun distraction during work, it offers a unique way to bring characters into the digital workspace. The app’s simplicity, combined with its open-ended creative potential, has allowed it to remain a charming addition to desktops for many years.
